This is used as an adapter between the splines of the FASTen® adapters and the ball element. One side of the retainer has splines and the other has hemispheres. Rotation of the nut knob tightens two halves of the retainer together around the ball and the adapter splines. Thus, this ensures a reliable joint between the ball element and the adapter splines of a mounted device.
